Curacao is a good island for scooters. It is flat to rolling, rarely gets sustained downpours, and small enough that you can reach the northwest coast in under an hour from Willemstad. The main roads are paved. The secondary roads vary but are navigable.
This is a practical guide for anyone renting a scooter through Grace Glide who wants to know where to actually go.
Willemstad splits across the St. Anna Bay into Punda on the east and Otrabanda on the west. The Queen Emma Bridge connects them on foot and swings open for boat traffic. For a scooter, you cross via the Queen Juliana Bridge, which sits 56 meters above the water and has a view worth slowing down for.
Everything tourists come to Willemstad to see (the Handelskade waterfront facades, the synagogue in Punda, the market on Sha Caprileskade) is within a 10-minute ride from any central accommodation.
Head south from Punda along the coast toward Bapor Kibra. Mambo Beach is a resort strip with beach clubs, bars, and food. Popular with tourists and locals, especially on weekends.
Jan Thiel is 5 minutes further east. Calmer atmosphere than Mambo, cleaner water at the swimming section near the reef. By car, Jan Thiel parking can be frustrating on busy days. By scooter, it is not a factor.
The ride back toward Willemstad at sunset is the kind of thing you plan to do once and end up doing most evenings.
Take the main westbound road out of Otrabanda toward Westpunt. The road runs through the interior before descending to the coast near the northwest tip.
Playa Kenepa Chiki (Kleine Knip) is a small cove with turquoise water, a sandy beach, and a reef within swimming distance of the shore. On a weekday morning it is often empty. Playa Kenepa Grandi (Grote Knip) is 5 minutes further, larger, more facilities, same water quality.
The return can go inland through Barber and Soto or along the north coast road. The north coast is more exposed to the trade wind but has views the inland route does not.
Head east through Seru Loraweg toward the windward coast. The landscape shifts. The east coast faces the Atlantic, has rougher water, fewer tourists, and a different character from the leeward side.
Boka Tabla in Shete Boka National Park is a coastal blowhole that sounds like a thunderclap when the swell hits. The park entrance fee is modest. Boka Wandomi nearby is a beach that turtles use for nesting at certain times of year.
The loop closes back through the interior via Seru Loraweg. Total distance is roughly 60 kilometers. Allow 90 minutes of riding plus stops.
Fuel stations are widespread. You will not get stranded anywhere on the island. The main highway (Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard heading west) is the fastest road but not the most interesting. The secondary coastal and interior roads are where the island reveals itself.
Traffic in Willemstad during rush hour, roughly 7 to 8:30am and 4:30 to 6pm, is slow. Everything outside of those windows moves freely.
Curacao does not have a dramatic rainy season. When it rains, it typically passes within an hour. A light waterproof layer in a small bag is worth having.

Are there fuel stations on the west side? Yes, in Barber and near Westpunt. Check your level before heading out to the far end.
Is the north coast road safe for scooters? Yes. It is more exposed to the trade wind. Stay at a moderate speed on the open coastal sections. Not technical, just windy.
Can I take a scooter into Christoffel National Park? The park trails require vehicle entry with a fee. A scooter parks at the entrance. Check current access rules when you arrive.
What if the scooter breaks down? Grace Glide provides contact information at time of rental. Keep the number in your phone before leaving Willemstad.
Is Willemstad easy to navigate by scooter? Yes. The main streets are straightforward. The one-way system in Punda takes one trip to learn. After that it becomes second nature.
