Good to know
What do you need to rent a vehicle in Curaçao?
A valid national driving licence and a credit card for the deposit. Car rental usually requires you to be twenty-one or over. A 50cc scooter needs no licence at all.
Do you need a 4x4 in Curaçao?
Only for the unpaved tracks: the San Juan plantation coves, the quieter western bays, and rougher north-side approaches. Every paved road and serviced beach is fine in an economy car.
Is it better to rent a car or a scooter in Curaçao?
A car if you want the west-coast beaches, dive sites and any distance. A scooter if you are based around Willemstad, since parking stops being a problem and fuel costs almost nothing.
Do you need a licence for a scooter in Curaçao?
Not for a 50cc, which is why they are popular with visitors. Anything larger requires a motorcycle entitlement, and helmets are legally mandatory on every machine.
Should you book a rental vehicle in advance?
Yes, especially between December and April. High season genuinely empties the island's fleet, and late bookings mean higher prices and less choice.
Is parking free in Curaçao?
At nearly every beach and most of the island, yes. Central Willemstad is the exception, where parking garages in Punda and Otrobanda are the practical option.
