At the far northwest tip of the island, past the last village and a set of concrete steps, the reef starts a few metres from the sand. Playa Kalki is a small cove that divers rate as the best shore reef in Curaçao, and its underwater name says why. Alice in Wonderland: a field of coral grown in giant mushroom shapes, broad heads on narrow stalks, standing over a wall that drops away into open blue. You wade in off a rocky beach, swim out past the shore break, and the reef opens under you. A resident group of turtles works the shallows by the old fishermen's pier. Eagle rays cross the sand. This is the wild, unhurried end of Curaçao, a full hour from the cruise port and most of the crowds it brings.
How to get to Playa Kalki
A normal rental car reaches Playa Kalki. The roads are paved the whole way through Westpunt, no four-wheel drive needed, and the last turn runs a few hundred metres off the main road to a marked lot above the cove. From the lot you take concrete steps down to the beach, which is a small workout with dive gear.
The catch is distance. This is the most remote corner of the island, close to an hour from Willemstad, with the nearest fuel and cash a good drive back the way you came. Fill the tank before you set out. The far-west run also keeps a scooter honest only in good weather, so for most people the car is the sensible way out here.
Snorkelling Alice in Wonderland
Dive charts call this reef Alice in Wonderland, and the name holds up once you are under. The coral grows in huge mushroom shapes, broad flat heads on narrow stems, and it runs in a field from the shallows out to a crest that breaks over a wall. The reef starts close. A few metres off the sand you are already over coral in one to five metres of water, shallow enough to snorkel the whole thing from the surface. Free-divers drop down the mushroom stems. Divers follow the wall as it slopes past thirty metres and out into blue.
The life is dense. A resident group of six to eight turtles, green and hawksbill both, works the shallows around the old fishermen's pier. Eagle rays cross the sand flats. Green morays sit back in the coral, trumpetfish hang nose-down, parrotfish crunch the reef, and squid and octopus turn up toward dusk. Part of the reef is a working coral nursery, young colonies grown out and replanted, so what you swim over is a reef being actively rebuilt.
The entry is rocky. This is not a soft white-sand wade-in. You gear up at the shop on the beach, take the steps down, and go in off the sand or the small dock, over stones and dead coral. Water shoes earn their place here. Once you are past the shore break the reef does the rest.
