Grote Knip is the beach on the postcard, and for once the postcard undersells it. A wide crescent of white sand held between two headlands, water so blue and so clear it looks lit from below, and a limestone ledge on the right that half the beach is lining up to jump off. Locals call it Kenepa, or Playa Kenepa Grandi. The leap is about fifteen feet into water shallow enough to touch, which is why the teenagers make it look easy and the adults stand at the edge a while longer. Come early. The handful of shaded picnic tables go by mid-morning and the sun here does not forgive. Weekends the whole west end of the island turns up with coolers and music. Entry is free, parking is free, and the road out is long enough to keep the crowds honest.
Getting to Grote Knip
Grote Knip sits at the far north-west end of the island, about an hour out from Willemstad on the west-coast road. You want a car for it. The bus reaches Westpunt but leaves you a walk, and the last stretch of road in is rough enough that most rentals take it slow. There is a free lot up top and a lookout point above the bay that explains every photo you have seen of the island. Kleine Knip, the quieter sister beach, is a minute further down the road, so people who want both do them in one stop.
A rental car is the usual answer for the west-coast run; a guided beach day covers the whole coast without it.
What Grote Knip is like
The sand is white and soft underfoot until you reach the waterline, where the tide washes coral fragments in and out and it turns rough on bare feet. The water past it is the reason people drive an hour: deep, clear blue you can see straight to the bottom of, calm enough to swim and shallow enough near shore that children are fine in it. Reef life is thin right off the sand, so people come here to swim and to jump, not to snorkel. The cliff on the right is the draw, a limestone ledge with a scramble up and a fifteen-foot drop into deep water, and a small cave on the left you can crawl into among the washed-up coral.
What you do not get is much shade or much service. A few covered picnic tables, a small snack bar that keeps its own hours, and that is the lot. Bring water, bring an umbrella, and treat the day as a beach day you supply yourself.

Is Grote Knip the best beach in Curaçao?
It is the one most people name and most people photograph: a white-sand bay of deep, clear blue on the north-west coast, free to enter, with a clifftop lookout above it. Cas Abao and Porto Mari rival it for beauty with more facilities, but for the pure postcard, Grote Knip is the one.
Is Grote Knip free?
Yes. Free to enter and free to park. The only money on the sand is optional: a chair, an umbrella, something from the snack bar, and sometimes a small fee for the restroom.
Can you go cliff jumping at Grote Knip?
Yes, off the limestone ledge on the right, about a fifteen-foot drop into deep water with a scramble up to the top. It is the beach's signature move, though the water below is not bottomless, so check your landing first. For a bigger jump, Playa Forti further up the coast goes higher.
Is Grote Knip good for snorkelling?
Not especially. Reef life is thin right off the sand, so Grote Knip is a swimming and cliff-jumping beach. For snorkelling on the same coast, Playa Kalki and Playa Lagun are the ones to drive to.
What is Grote Knip also called?
Kenepa, or Playa Kenepa Grandi. Grote Knip is the Dutch name and Kenepa Grandi the Papiamentu; they are the same beach. Its smaller neighbour is Kleine Knip, or Kenepa Chiki, a minute down the road.
Do you need a car to get to Grote Knip?
Effectively yes. It sits about an hour from Willemstad at the far north-west end, and while a bus reaches Westpunt, it leaves you a walk. A car also lets you pair it with Kleine Knip next door.
Is there shade at Grote Knip?
